Application Security Team Lead
About the assignment
A leading organisation is scaling its application security function. You'll build and lead a team responsible for secure code review, vulnerability assessment, and security architecture guidance across development teams.
You'll shift the security culture from reactive to preventive—integrating threat modelling, SAST/DAST, and secure coding practices into the development pipeline. Your team becomes the trusted security partner developers turn to for architectural decisions.
This role combines hands-on technical leadership with team strategy, reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer.
Your responsibilities
- Build and mentor an application security team, setting technical direction and growth paths
- Design and implement secure SDLC practices including threat modelling, code review, and security gates
- Lead vulnerability assessment programmes using SAST, DAST, and manual testing techniques
- Develop security requirements and architecture guidance for platform and application teams
- Manage relationships with development leads, ensuring security is embedded—not bolted on
- Track application security metrics, report risk posture to leadership, and drive remediation priorities
- Stay current with evolving threats, frameworks (OWASP), and secure coding standards

Must-haves
- 8+ years application security or secure software development experience
- Proven track record building and leading technical teams (3+ years)
- Deep hands-on expertise in code review, SAST/DAST tools, and vulnerability assessment
- Strong knowledge of OWASP principles and secure coding standards
- Excellent communication skills—you translate security concepts for developers and executives alike
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with threat modelling frameworks (STRIDE, PASTA)
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipeline security and DevSecOps practices
- Background in containerisation and cloud-native application security
