Chief Privacy Officer (Interim)
About the assignment
A leading public sector organisation seeks an Interim Chief Privacy Officer to embed privacy and data protection frameworks across all operations. You operate within a three-lines governance model, translating privacy risks and emerging trends into concrete measures. This role demands both strategic counsel to leadership and direct involvement in DPIA execution, data projects, and innovative applications including AI—positioning privacy as a driver of quality, trust, and innovation.
You work cross-functionally, visible and accessible to business partners and the Data Protection Officer. Success means strengthening privacy awareness in daily practice while maintaining rigorous risk management and regulatory compliance.
Your responsibilities
- Design and implement privacy and data protection strategies aligned with GDPR, implementing legislation, and sector best practices
- Conduct DPIAs and privacy impact assessments for new data initiatives, AI applications, and service innovation
- Advise executive leadership and the board on privacy risks, regulatory trends, and governance improvements
- Lead cross-departmental privacy projects, ensuring practical application of frameworks and compliance controls
- Build privacy capability across the organisation through training, awareness campaigns, and stakeholder engagement
- Monitor regulatory changes (GDPR, local data protection laws) and adapt policies and procedures accordingly
- Collaborate with IT security, legal, and operations teams to embed privacy by design in processes and systems
- Report on privacy performance, incidents, and metrics to management and the Data Protection Officer

Must-haves
- Minimum 5 years as Chief Privacy Officer, lead privacy professional, or senior privacy advisor in complex public or large-scale organisations
- Deep knowledge of GDPR, Dutch implementing legislation, and privacy law; proven DPIA and data project experience
- Academic background in law, information management, or equivalent; university degree required
- Strong advisory skills: ability to explain complex privacy matters clearly to diverse audiences, both written and verbal
- Natural leadership with connection-building and persuasion; demonstrated ability to operate cross-functionally within three-lines governance
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with AI governance and privacy implications of emerging technologies
- Background in public sector or government organisations
- Fluency in Dutch language and familiarity with Dutch administrative culture
