Senior Privacy Officer
About the assignment
A leading organisation in the public sector seeks a Senior Privacy Officer to embed privacy into service and product design from day one. You'll work within the Privacy team, stationed primarily at the Traffic and Public Space Directorate, advising multiple municipal departments on GDPR compliance, risk management, and privacy governance.
You identify bottlenecks early, advise on decision-making, and translate policy into working processes. You coordinate with the CISO, architects, information managers, and leadership to ensure the organisation stays in control of personal data processing and regulatory obligations.
Your responsibilities
- Draft processor agreements, privacy statements, regulations and protocols aligned with Amsterdam's privacy standards
- Coordinate GDPR record-keeping and conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) across municipal processes
- Provide secondary oversight of personal data processing; monitor and report compliance to directorate leadership
- Advise on privacy aspects of system design, procurement, Freedom of Information requests, data breaches, and legal disputes
- Design and implement citywide privacy processes; support legal teams on privacy implications
- Deliver presentations and workshops on GDPR; facilitate privacy working groups and cross-functional alignment
- Identify and propose control measures at cluster or task level; prioritise remediation efforts
- Proactively advise on privacy risks and opportunities in public service delivery and policy design

Must-haves
- Proven experience as Privacy Officer or DPO in a complex, multi-directorate environment
- Expert knowledge of GDPR and Dutch privacy law (AVG)
- Ability to conduct DPIAs and design privacy-compliant processes from scratch
- Strong communication skills: translate privacy law into actionable advice for non-specialist stakeholders
- Experience advising on data protection across IT procurement, system design, and legal matters
Nice-to-haves
- Background in public sector or government organisation
- Certification: CIPP/E or CIPM
- Experience with privacy governance frameworks and policy development
